In November, 2014, we- Amber Attalla and Laura Shaw- will spend one week at an immigration detention center in Artesia, New Mexico (The Artesia Center). As you may have heard, over 65,000 unaccompanied children and tens of thousands more Central Americans traveling as families have crossed the Mexican border into the United States since October, 2013. Unprepared for what has been characterized as a surge of immigration, the United States federal government started The Artesia Center, a makeshift immigration detention center located in a remote, desolate area of New Mexico. Many children, even toddlers, are forced to defend their cases in immigration court without the help of legal counsel. While in Artesia, we will assist in the legal representation of the families being held. The purpose of this blog is to document our experiences in order to raise awareness concerning the day to day life of the women and children being held at the facility, and the struggles they face.
